8 Great Foods to Eat in Macau - Macau Food Guide

1 - Pork Chop Buns

Possibly the most famous savory food to try in Macau is the Pork Chop Bun. The dish is more of a snack than a meal, although I would be more than happy to eat a couple of these with a veg side dish dish as my main meal at night, they are so delicious.

2 - Egg Custard Tarts

Just as popular with travellers and tourists (and locals) as the pork chop buns, has to be the famous Egg Custard Tarts of Macau

The most visited of all the custard tart bakeries in Macau is Lord Stow's, but there are loads more that are also excellent. It is worth trying out a few and deciding for yourself which is your favorite.

I never did find out what their actual name was, but you will find this popular street food all across Macau, Served piping hot in a bowl of gravy, you can have them regular or super-spicy and they are absolutely delicious.

4 - Cornish Pasties

I'm not even joking here, but you must be asking yourself how this British classic made it on to the list? Well, Lord Stowe's bakery makes what I think might be the best (bought) pasty in the world. As good as your grandmother used to make? Not quite, but very nearly as good as homemade!

5 - Congee

Although the thought of a warm, savory rice pudding didn't appeal to me at first, I got totally addicted to this dish. Coming in so many different varieties, it is so delicious and also, very good for you too. The warm feeling it gives you feels very healing and it probably is.

6 - Hot Pots

For most people in the US, their idea of Chinese food is mostly about noodles, rice, stir-fry and deep-fry. Well, there is actually a lot more to Chinese cuisine than that. One the best examples is the Chinese hot pot - complex, balanced tastes and deeply satisfying. Some hot pots are works of genius.

7 - Buffet Style Food with Locals

If you head down the small back streets, you soon get away from the tourists and you can then be able to discover what the local folk are eating.

A lot of the locals in Macau seem to eat their main meals out, rather than at home. You will find a lot of cafe-style places where the food is on display, just waiting to be put on a plate for you to eat straight away.

Eating out in a locals place gives you a real feel for how people live and you also get to meet some wonderful, friendly and giving people.

8 - The Food Court at The Venetian

OK, this is not a 'specific food', but the Food Court at the Macau Venetian is a wonderful place to discover the types of food that are popular with people in mainland China (the cast majority of visitors to Macau are Chinese).

The food court at The Venetian gives you a wonderful insight into the 'exotic' food that is loved by Chinese people.

It's not bad value either!

Of course, being a foodie, I wouldn't stop at just these 8 foods (and places) - there is so much more in Macau to eat. For example, all of the wonderful Portuguese restaurants serving their bacalhau and suckling pig.

You will also find wonderful milk custard rice pudding dishes in Macau that are worth looking for. Beef jerky is very popular and comes in all sorts of styles and flavors. Almond pastries and cookies can be found all over the place too - mostly for the tourist crowd, but they are very very popular.

If you are a fan of seafood, you will find a lot of top quality restaurants that will be perfect for you. The great thing here is that the fish are still alive when you order them and so you could not possibly get fresher. Look for tanks of fish that are well oxygenated (lots of bubbles!) and with fish that look lively, rather than limp and flaccid.

A lot of people come to Macau looking to buy dried seafood, especially dried scallops and also, the famous XO sauce to go with it - a strong tasting sauce made with shrimp, ham, garlic, fish sauce and more.
