Just a few things to see in Macau, if you don't have long
With so many things to see and do in Macau, it can be overwhelming. Especially if you only have a short time period in which to explore.
Personally, I loved exploring all the back streets and enjoying eating with the local. I love street food, so Macau was a wonderful place to eat for me. I also loved the historic Centre and the temples.
Of course, the casinos are a huge attraction and even if you are not into gambling, they are worth a look, because they have so many treasures inside them - ancient artifacts, gems and gold just to name a few.
If you only had limited time in Macau City, then this would be the best place to start, probably combined with a visit to the Lisboa casinos, just to see what they are all about.
The historical centre is very clean, safe and there is plenty to see. You can see the magnificent Portuguese buildings and discover small back streets, small and taste the street foods, shop for Macanese tourist delicacies and do some shopping all in the same small area.
The are several temples in Macau, each with their own appeal. The one right in the centre of Macau itself, leading up to the high up Guia Hill Municipal Park, is well worth a visit, combined with visiting the park itself.
My favorite though is A-Ma temple, which is absolutely lovely. This temple is situated down by the Maritime Museum. It is very well preserved and very tranquil. At the same time you are there, you might like to walk around the area, which has some superb street food and friendly locals.
Yes, it is difficult to go to Macau without visiting a casino. Most people coming to Macau are there just to visit a casino and stay in their hotels, but if you were there just to travel and tour, it would be a shame not to go to at least a couple of them.
If I were just going to visit two casinos I would go to The Lisboa Casinos (they are separate, but very different, so worth seeing both new and old) and The Venetian Casino too.
The Venetian Casino in Macau is on the island of Taipa, so the quickest way to see it is via taxi, but whilst you are there, you could also visit Tai Pa Village
Without doubt, this is considered to be Macau's most famous landmark. Cathedrals are always massively popular with tourists! Personally, it wasn't my favorite place.
Perhaps I have been spoiled on the Cathedral front, seen too many. But, a lot of other people were raving about it, so if Cathedrals are your thing, then St Paul's should be on your list.
